Ambery Fragrances For Men

Ambery fragrances have an extensive history and range, leaning into other categories and imparting their signature warm touch to others. Amber fragrances begin with a combination of resins, spices, incense, and vanilla, and often this is the starting point for much creative variation. Often seen as the most sensual and romantic of the fragrance categories, it’s possible to get lost in the sheer complexity of the genre, which includes Amber, Woody Amber, Soft Amber, and Floral Amber subfamilies.

The Fragrance Wheel classification system was founded by fragrance taxonomist Michael Edwards and is a great way to classify and discover fragrances. The underlying principle is that once you find a fragrance family you like (our Fragrance Finder tool can help with this), many of the other fragrances within that category will also be of interest to you.

The Amber Category

A category rich with resinous notes, the amber accord tends to consist of labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, modulated at the creative whim of the perfumer. The magic of these fragrances are in the base, which smoulders and is apparent throughout the life of the scent. Popular examples include Tobacco Vanille (Tom Ford, 2007), Habit Rouge (Guerlain, 1965), and Musc Ravageur (Frederic Malle, 2000). From our range, consider Papyrus Oud (Parle Moi de Parfum) and Ummagumma (FZOTIC).

The Woody Amber Category

A blending of amber materials with patchouli, sandalwood, and powerful aroma materials have produced some of the most impactful, and popular, scents on the market today. Examples include Black Orchid (Tom Ford, 2006), Portrait of a Lady (Frederic Malle, 2010), L’Air du Desert Marocain (Tauer, 2005), and Obsession for Men (Calvin Klein, 1986), amongst many others. From our range, also consider 1899 (Histoires de Parfums), O/E (Bogue), and Jubilation XXV (Amouage).

The Floral Amber Category

Merging amber notes with florals lends them power and distinction, drawing out characteristics unlike anything else. Sweet and spicy orange blossom notes dominate this category, which lends addiction and magnetism. From our range, consider Rose Aria by Heeley and Moth by Zoologist.

Soft Amber

Soft Amber fragrances are often laden with incense, with the usual lashings of spice and resin. In combination, the family has a soft texture with a subtle yet potent radiance. The masculine classic Bay Rum Cologne is such an example. Other popular examples include Ambre Sultan (Serge Lutens, 2000), Cardinal (Heeley, 2006). Also see: Spice Must Flow (Etat Libre d’Orange), and Incense Rose (Tauer Perfumes).
