Oud Fragrances

The most prized material in Arabic perfumery, oud is the resinous heartwood of the agarwood tree - rare, expensive, and unlike anything else in fragrance. At its best it is simultaneously animalic and sweet, woody and smoky, with a complexity that synthetic alternatives have never convincingly replicated. NOAH stocks some of the finest oud fragrances available in Australia, from classical Arabic interpretations through to contemporary Western takes on the material. Samples available for every fragrance.

Oud — also known as agarwood or oud wood — is produced when the Aquilaria tree becomes infected with a specific mould, causing the heartwood to produce a dense, dark resin as a defence mechanism. The result is one of the most expensive raw materials in the world, and one of the most complex. Its smell is simultaneously sweet and animalic, woody and leathery, with a depth that changes over hours on skin in ways that few other materials can match.

The material has been central to Arabic and Middle Eastern perfumery for centuries — burned as incense in the home, applied as concentrated oil to the skin, and used as the anchor note in the great Oriental compositions. It arrived in Western niche perfumery in the early 2000s and transformed the industry, introducing a register of richness and longevity that European perfumery had largely moved away from.

Amouage remains the standard-bearer for classical oud composition. Founded in Muscat in 1983 under royal patronage, the house was built on Omani frankincense and the finest available regional oud. Interlude Man and Opus XIII Silver Oud represent two ends of the Amouage range — the former dense and operatic, the latter more refined and silvery.

Creed approaches oud from a European angle. Royal Oud, one of the house's most enduring compositions, places the material in a context of cedar and spice rather than the resinous amber base typical of Middle Eastern interpretations. The result is lighter and more structured — oud as a luxury material rather than as a mood.

Initio's Oud For Greatness takes a different approach entirely — raw, intense, and deliberately confrontational. Built around the natural essence of oud wood with patchouli and musk, it is one of the boldest oud fragrances in the NOAH collection.

Heeley's Agarwoud offers a cooler, more meditative take — the oud here is dry and smoky rather than sweet, closer to the smell of the burning incense than the concentrated oil. It is a fragrance for those who find most oud compositions too warm or too sweet.

A note on sampling: oud fragrances vary more dramatically between compositions than almost any other family. The difference between a classical Arabic oud and a contemporary Western interpretation can be as significant as the difference between two entirely different families. Sampling before purchasing is strongly recommended. An oud sample pack is available, and individual samples can be ordered for every fragrance in the collection.

If you are new to oud and unsure where to start, the Fragrance Finder will help identify which interpretation of the material is most likely to suit your tastes.
