Scents of Wood

View as

A brand with three names, each gives sense to the philosophy of a house obsessed with woody materials, journeying into the magical mystery of forests and trees, which make us fall in love with nature and the universe.

ShinrinYoku in Japanese loosely translates to ‘Forest Bathing’, a walking meditation amongst trees. It is the attraction to this living material. L’Ame du Bois in French, the ‘Soul of Wood’ - speaking to the process where organic perfumer's alcohol is aged in wooden barrels - a signature of the brand. Finally, Scents of Wood, the brand’s English name, designating the final output of this labour of love, via the perfumer.

Scents of Wood have perfected the art and science of barrel aging. Traditionally the odourless diluent in a mixture with aromatic oil, alcohol becomes visible - one more ingredient in the perfumer’s palette. Scents of Wood collects wooden barrels whenever they come across them, from Scotland to Kentucky to Cognac. Vintage barrels that had given life to spirits many times over, and new barrels that had yet to age anything, but whose wood had already lived a lifetime in a forest somewhere. Barrel-aged, wood-infused alcohol lends a rich, deep, and intriguing effect; a patina.

  • A scented love letter to the forest. Barrel-aged fragrances celebrating woody materials, made in America.
  • Using a generous palette of materials from Laboratoire Monique Remy (LMR IFF).
  • Founder Fabrice Croisé asks his perfumers: “tell me about [your] personal forest”, and creation follows.
  • Scents of Wood makes the alcohol, the solvent, a noble component of the perfume. Aged in wood barrels, sometimes ex-spirit casks like Bourbon or Cognac, infuses it with an incomparable aroma and richness, lending a patina to the fragrance.
  • Scents of Wood offers some vintage products, specifying the age of the barrel used. This speaks to the natural variation of the wood itself, imparting different qualities. The perfume formula is adjusted accordingly.
