Bay rum colognes trace their spicy, boozy charm back to the West Indies in the 16th and 17th centuries, when sailors - desperate to mask the smell of months at sea - began steeping crushed West Indian bay leaves (from the Pimenta racemosa tree) in rum. The result was a fragrant, invigorating tonic that quickly caught on as a makeshift cologne and antiseptic. By the 19th century, this DIY grooming ritual had gone mainstream, bottled and sold in barbershops across the Caribbean and eventually around the world, where it became a staple of the clean-cut gentleman. With its warm blend of spice, wood, citrus, and clove, bay rum remains a nostalgic nod to the old-school: equal parts pirate, dandy, and barbershop swagger.
