Zoologist’s founder Victor Wong believes that the difficulty of working with eucalyptus in fine perfumery is cultural. The material arrives already coloured by association - medicated muscle balms, steam rooms, domestic product - hardly the register for fine fragrance.

In reworking the original Koala, a collaboration with George Tedder opened a different path. His first composition shifted the frame entirely: dewy, tensile, lightly worn. A green that feels mobile rather than imposed, carrying the ease of a traveller moving through soft light, fabric catching shadows as much as air. A traditional eucalyptus note is replaced with a more subtle impression of eucalyptus leaves at the top, and wood in the heart, distributed throughout, attenuated, and released from its medicinal weight. Koala Joey Edition retains the recognisable signature of eucalyptus, set against the possibility of letting it dissolve into something less declarative.

Layers of green define this fragrance - basil, clary sage, galbanum, geranium, spearmint, and of course eucalyptus - the latter tender and toothsome; a whiff of moisture and humidity among crunchy, sparky, spiced herbs - fluffed with mimosa - what we might call wattle - warmed from the bottom with a comforting dose of Aussie sandalwood.
