Tips For A Great Shave: Nathan Jancauskas

Tips For A Great Shave: Nathan Jancauskas
After nearly 20 years working in the business, I've tried lots of products. Below are my current favourites, and my suggestions on how to achieve a great shave.

I always shave after a shower where possible, as the steam and water is the perfect prep. Personally, I've never had a need for a pre-shave product, but if you struggle to get a comfortable shave, it's something you should try. If a shower is not possible, thoroughly hydrate your beard with warm water, or warm towels.

Run a shaving brush under warm water to heat it up. Get it nice and wet, then give it a good shake or two to remove excess water. If you're in the market for a shaving brush, please choose a synthetic - they're just as good as any badger one, and no animals are harmed in the process.

Castle Forbes Lime has been a favourite cream of mine at the moment. The scent is nice and zingy and the cream is rich and dense. I load an almond sized amount onto the damp brush and lather directly on my face if using a cream, or into a shave bowl (see below) if I'm using a hard soap.

Once warmed, a bowl keeps lather warm. The ridges on the base help build a lather. Once the lather is built, apply it to your face. Keep unused lather in the brush so you can come back to it for a second pass.

double edge razor may look scary, or outdated, but the blades are cheap, sharp and they give a great shave. You'll never go back after you've learnt to use one.

Let’s not forget the blade - perhaps the most important part of the whole shave. Feather blades are sharp and my favourite. (Note that I didn't like these from day one, I found them too sharp, but after a few months/years of shaving with the razor, they became my favourite). When it’s time to replace these blades, I put used blades into a Blade Bank.

Proceed to shave with the grain. Use a light touch and gentle pressure. Hold the razor at an angle where it cuts, but isn't dragging perpendicular on your skin. Don't try to shave all the stubble off in the first pass, else you'll be inclined to push too hard with the razor.

Rinse your face with warm water, then lather up again using the shaving brush. Shave again with the grain (across the grain if required for a closer shave). Make sure you've not missed any bits, then rinse your face with cold water to finish.

A block of alum or a styptic pencil are necessary to close any small nicks or cuts you might get.

Then to finish, I like Trumper's Skin Food as an aftershave balm (Eucris and Limes are my favourite scents). It soothes and hydrates skin after shaving, and can be used as a pre-shave too. And that's it - you're done.
