The sun sparkled across rippling waves, its morning dance upon the Indian Ocean rousing the dodos from their carefree slumber. Stumbling drunkenly across the forest floor they feasted on overripe fruit where it lay, dropped for them by the lush island paradise that nurtured them. For generations, the predator-free and bountiful shores lulled them into such a state of complacency that their wings grew idle, and flight was lost – even to memory. Ultimately evolution would betray them, but while it lasted, the dodos enjoyed an existence marked by ease and comfort. In Zoologist Dodo, notes of jackfruit and bergamot border a winding path dappled with aromatic turmeric and pink pepper. Venture along it to the heart of an island forest where hints of powdery orris emerge from beneath a potpourri of lavender, geranium, and orange flower. Soothed by the comforting florals, you’ll soon surrender, sinking into the loam where woody tonka and sandalwood sprout from an earthy base of patchouli and vetiver.

Fougere heaven, Dodo Jackfruit gets it right with its perfect and civilised blend of aromatic, woody, and spicy-sweet qualities. Whilst its initial blast of ripe tropical fruit is unmissable, mention must be paid to its fougere base, which is unfaltering and central. Sturdy and steady lavender forms its heart, spicy with cool-and-warm breath and its signature fuzzy texture, infused with the sizzling and minty beat of geranium, softened with romantic orange blossom. Its agrestic, warm, and slightly arid-dusty character is emphasised with tonka bean, which dominates the transition from heart to base. It calls to mind hay, tobacco, almond, and dried earthy roots. All of this supports an exciting and novel top of tropical fruit, a delicious combination of yellow and green which reaches into the base like polychromatic sunlight.

This flanker softens the impact of the original Dodo without displacing its curious twists and overall impression. The sharp greens of the original are softened – neon turns to pastel – blurred as the dodo bird dashes through a dusty earth strewn with flowers, exotic fruits, and herbs, leaving a scented trail. The dry down of Dodo Jackfruit reveals a lavender and tonka dominant fougere remarkably close to the warm earth, complex with notes of iris root, vetiver, turmeric, patchouli, and labdanum – roots, shrubs, and warmth.
