Representations of the fougère family tend to opt for a purplish blue, as if to evoke the soft coolness of lavender. Or perhaps more faithfully, a forest green, referencing its origins as the spicy scent of a fern. La Couleur de la Nuit achieves something special, simultaneously preserving these traditional colours, coating them in a nocturnal red while bathing it in a stretch of shadow, creating a notable chiaroscuro effect. Perfumer Isabelle Doyen has not reworked the usual structure of the fougère, per se, but embraces this two-pronged split and turns it into a braid. A well-measured dose of fir balsam cleaves - it is the fork between the two styles: one leaning on lavender, and that more redolent of green ferns with a geranium freshness, sharing a quality of freshness and powderiness, length and shape. In a word, it is immediately familiar.

Doyen brilliantly achieves balance and harmony, and it is hard to discern which style of fougere dominates. It is pitch-perfect and very satisfying. More than this, her refined arrangement has produced a fougère with exceptional duskiness and a stylish red overlay, like the diffused glowing light of a red lantern or a neon sign. No single note is responsible for this effect; rather, what is there is drawn out in a certain way. Perhaps it is the innate spiciness of its many materials: the slightly raspy piquancy of lavender, the dark, chinotto-like zip and hum of bergamot, and so forth. Fir balsam reinforces this sensation with its rich, sweetly earthy woodiness with its resinous lines, darkening the scent a few degrees down from its usual colouring. Even more, everything is so brilliantly soft and textured with a vanilla-patchouli melt – if massaged by the perfumer, it can’t help but blush a soft red.
