Anarchist A_ smothers with its clinical cool, converging the scent of plastic with incense. At first one might imagine a smooth mirror surface - a tranquil body of water, a sheet of metal, iridescent ink - turn your attention to this long enough and everything starts to shift. Flowers in a vase of rubbing alcohol, stale water in a marble stoop, snow that is neither solid nor liquid, a recently snuffed candle, long tendrils of incense smoke, money impregnated with the oil of our fingers. David-Lev creates fragrances not with notes in the traditional sense, but with developed accords, as if to capture scents in the midst of action. The story is already well-underway in a Toskovat’ fragrance, and with an initial spritz we are catapulted right into the heart of the narrative - always with the opportunity to find something for ourselves in this composition. Anarchist A_ is not all abstraction. Its substantive foundations, I will suggest, are rich with woody-musky materials - something in the realm of cashmeran, javanol, ambrocenide, clearwood and/or timberol. Nonetheless, we ask for the experience to be primary: Anarchist A_ is a story of disappointed purity - like in a De Sade novel where salvation quickly goes sour.
