"One of the central pillars in the perfume formula is the double distilled extract of cocoa beans from the Ivory Coast. Very hard to get, not available every year, produced in smaller batches: Heraud might not be available at all times. This is the sacrifice we have to pay for quality. This cocoa bean absolute is overdosed in the perfume formula and radiates lovely throughout the entire perfume."

You seemingly need to catch Heraud in the midst of its movement, which morphs in gorgeous slow motion so we can see every aspect of its character. Heraud is a perfume that is about the luxury of experience - good materials are a given with Andy Tauer, but the real extravagance is the sensation of the perfume unfurling in time. Artistry is a matter of form and arrangement, and here it feels like a generous proposition - indeed, a proclamation promised by its name.

Tauer draws out this herald so as to elongate the feeling of anticipation. Its opening is a dizzying vortex, like the very best smells to emerge from a snifter of brandy - carried on gentle vapours that reveal notes of fruit, spice, floral, and wood. Before you can identify the central cocoa notes of Heraud, you’ll detect candied orange, and a pomander of clove and cinnamon, you might then detect poached pears, dates, tropical fruit, honey, muguet, jasmine, and vanilla. Revealed one at a time, all of which form nodes in a constellation that says: cocoa.

This cocoa note does not stay still, oscillating between dustiness and milky creaminess, amongst the driest wood notes and the most lusciously sticky fruits. Spruiked with the characteristic Tauer sparkle, Heraud’s dry down resembles the textured timbre and steadiness of plucked strings on a double bass.
