Nicolai’s Patchouli is a bold green surprise, immediately appealing to those who adore the retro powerhouses where more is more, and yet always in the balance. Bold lashes consisting of herbs, geranium, lavender, oakmoss - the patchouli note can sustain everything added to it, transforming each and every addition when in contact with the note, gaining in immensity: a far-reaching, far-projecting, earthy bubble of scent.

But it too is unusual, and Patricia de Nicolai has seemingly made it her business to show us how wildly versatile the namesake material can be, opting not to choose one facet over the other, but to present them all in complex enigmatic harmony: aromatic, mossy, herbal, ambery, balsamic, leather, shaving foam, and forest floors. It is fresh up top with citruses where orange dominates, warmed on the sides, and enriched in the centre with lavender and geranium, revealing flickers of its earthy chocolate facet - but quickly turning woody with a hint of rose. An intoxicating scent that nods to the classics but is entirely itself.
