Wearable fire. Le Mat burns but it does not scorch - it is not an aggressive perfume though it is a bold one. The earth is present in this blend, as the nose is first brought down until it then looks up to the sky. How does the composition render this ‘fool’? It is perhaps in its mercurial nature on the skin - the way rose tumbles through dusty earth, sun-roasted sand, and scorched vegetation redolent of garrigue; or its brazen sense of walking through and inhabiting a blazing fire. Yes, Le Mat is a rose fragrance, though there’s enough fragmentation and deliberate discordance in its experience that you’d happily call it something else (or something more). Le Mat is dry yet juicy, built on internal paradoxes and bold contrasts; it draws out and explodes the nuances of its materials. Nutmeg reveals its woodiness, immortelle its meadow-like sweetness reminiscent of chamomile, patchouli its herbaceousness, pepper its fuzziness, and geranium its cool spicy bite. A key oscillation in Le Mat is the play of geranium and immortelle, cool and hot, it changes the face of this rose note anchored with patchouli. Though one always returns to the rose, the metamorphic material that is singed, metallic, peppery, jammy, powdery, blushing, besides firewood, wild mushrooms, savoury herbs, pot pourri, and strong spices as if lifted out of a mediaeval cookbook.
