A fragrance on fire. Athanor is an olfactory meditation of alchemy - sublimation, conversion, refinement. Its opening is striking - one can imagine hot metal continuously beaten into shape - an iris made from leather and metal, repeatedly cooled and heated, oscillating between these two extremes. Athenor exploits the natural bivalency of this incredible root, which is cold and metallic on the one hand, warm and elemental on the other. Hissing, exhaling, releasing - the sulphur impression, more an idea than actual, is suitably souring and a little acrid, dramatising the leather qualities of this fragrance, which begins to resemble a classic ‘Peau d’Espagne’ with its hint of tannery. A layering of smoky materials form a suggestion of soot and char, with a clean burning aroma set against this: cypriol, guaiac, and vetiver - but also ‘fumencens’, a wonder material that involves carbonizing frankincense resin, producing a unique ‘red hot’ quality with smoky birch and woody impressions. An alchemy of its own. All of this is smoothened generously with resins.
