A spectacular quality of lavender oil gives Philosopher’s Walk its distinctive flair. Here it grows in the northern region of Provence, at elevations above 800 metres. This results in the finest lavender, representing no more than 5% of the total output from France. In contrast to industry standards that distill a fresher, crushed green [‘vert broyé’] flower, this specific lavender is dried in the field before being processed, enriching and complexifying its aromatic profile, highlighting the toasted, almond, and gourmand-like facets. Though the distillation output is lower in yield, it is markedly richer and more concentrated. At a significant 4% dose, this fine lavender is put on display in Philosopher’s Walk, placed within a fougere frame consisting of vibrant top notes of high quality bergamot from the Ionian Coast that uniquely showcases floral and powdery facets, and Provencal clary sage absolute that sings with defined leathery facets underneath.

Swaying alongside a generous bounty of fresh citruses, herbs, bitter plants, and spices - as is typical of an aromatic fougere - lavender is soon embraced by a nearly overwhelming pump of florals, a mix of fresh bursting blooms and desiccated petals turned to a refined powder - from spicy carnation, sweet violet, and smiling orange blossom. Quickly memories of barbershops fill the mind: fern-scented talcum powder, bay rum, zingy splashes made of minty geranium and citruses, steaming hot towels scented with essential oils, and fresh pine-sandalwood shaving soap whipped into a cushiony lather. Underneath all of this, nostalgic elements of moss, animalic and dirtied costus, vetiver and patchouli gives seriousness, respecting the heritage virtues of the time honoured fougère family.
