Occasion:
A meditation in the snow, stillness and motion. A concrete abstraction: the touch and feel of snow, its contradictions, its strength and its softness. Spices and flowers work through a fluffy fresh body. Cooling, but also, paradoxically, warming. A charming wearable poetry.
Isabelle Larignon's Inspiration:
It all started with the discovery of an astonishingly poetic text, a pamphlet by the astronomer and mathematician, Johannes Kepler entitled, On the Six-Cornered Snowflake dated 1610. In a playful tone, the astronomer tells the story of his quest: to find a New Year’s gift inspired by the concept of nothingness for his patron and friend, a fan of Nihil, namely nothingness.
Dust, wind, smoke, sparks of fire, drops of water, … Kepler lists what Nature offers as objects evoking nothing but which unfortunately still represent too much. The text is a meditation on the geometry of snowflakes and on any hexagonal shape revealing the cosmopoesis of the Universe: “From this almost nothing, a tiny atom of snow, I was close to recreating the whole Universe, that contains everything”.
This text opened a quest, mine as a perfumer, to capture the spirit of snow. The snow, its smell as silent as a landscape caught in its felted coat, as deaf as the sounds absorbed by its porous structure and rugged surface. And yet, the snow and its snowflakes are not lacking in evocations. Cold, white, purity, powdery, fluffy, lightness, airy, watery, ozonic, geometry, contemplative, meditative … and also oxymorons: burn, hardness, metallic.
