Claude LeCoq published his first book, The Soft Lawn, in 1916 while still attending Princeton University. A controversial portrait of adolescent upper-class rebellion in New England, the coming-of-age story follows Hampton Perry, a charmingly snotty college tennis champ who, after years of having everything handed to him on a silver platter, finds himself handing it all back. A little-known fact about the author: Claude LeCoq wore only seersucker suits, known in that era as the wardrobe of the poor, and it was his gallant presence at high society dinners and prestigious sporting events that brought the fabric into popularity among the affluent in the ’20s.

A portrait of green, many greens, both synthetic and natural. Dew on grass and vines climbing up trellises, freshly opened cans of tennis balls and green rubber hoses. Bay leaf lends a spicy, camphoraceous edge to this fragrance that is charged with the acerbic sizzle of grapefruit. This is surrounded all over by cool and refreshing ivy leaves and honied linden (lime) blossom, grounded with vetiver and oakmoss - darker, more umbrous forms of green that move close to brown. This is the scent of seeking shade under a canopy of leaves after a game of tennis; the scent of clay tennis courts as well as synthetic ones. There is good and mischievous humour in this scent - amongst some seriously good construction.
