One might think of a chypre as a banquet, which for those who love classical perfumes, crave the extravagance of each course logically moving into the next. Shangri La is glorious work: it transitions in sweeping motions, unfolding so one movement is always caught-up in the next. Sun-warmed and spiced citruses and fruits, namely bergamot and peach, rise and fall, like Champagne bubbles that seem to fizz downwards. Sultry and intoxicating, this freshness leads into an amber-coloured floral heart, where lavish doses of creamy jasmine, rose, and iris find sturdy grounding in darkening notes of vetiver and oakmoss. Shangri La employs oakmoss to the highest possible degree within a regulatory framework, and the result is manifest. One gets lost in this paradise, a gentle delirium of falling into exquisite depth. The fragrance is more lascivious than what is typical of a dry leathery chypre, somewhat gooey in the centre and potent, darkening and becoming increasingly smoky as it dries down.
