Hyde opens with a strong burst of bright lemon and bergamot. These cheerful notes then clash with the dry and sharp scent of birch tar, reminiscent of burned wood - and cassie, an opulent flower with intense green and spicy nuances. Both form a vibrant leather note with powerful depth and intense appeal. This beating heart is embraced by a warm and elegant base of smoky labdanum and malt vanilla melting into earthy oakmoss.

The virtues of a smoke fragrance may not immediately be apparent - but once you see the figures through this dark mass, one recognises its transformative effect. The smoke here is an entity in its own right, astonishingly shapely and elegant, though intense and bold at the same time. Hyde is a fragrance built from birch tar, which showcases accents of sweetness, woodiness, herbaceousness - it is surprisingly receptive to additions, presenting a double effect of softening and extending. Lemon and bergamot offer relief as acidity cuts through rich smokiness - a clear ringing sound while everything else hums. Certainly, this resonant hum is filled with labdanum, vanilla, and oakmoss - an enriching blend, simple depth becomes complexity. Birch tar’s central bedfellow, however, is glorious cassie flower. In the same family as mimosa, it imparts a distinct floral aspect - all green and yellow, unctuous-balsamic, spicy, powder, and aqueous all at once - it spreads itself across the smoky body of the fragrance. Hyde rewards patient wearing, force and restraint at once.

Bought this a few weeks ago and love it. Smells wonderful, longevity is brilliant, and does project off my skin.

Childhood memories of camping in the southern regions of Australia. Campfires and crunchy dry gum tree bark underfoot. Considering this fragrance comes from the Netherlands, it's a stunning illusion that I can feel my own very-real Aussie memories in this bottle. Pure magic. A sincerely fave fragrance of mine from day-1

Dark, primordial leather

The most unapologetically masculine of Hiram Green’s creations to date, Hyde grabs you by the throat and ejects you into late-Victorian London, an inkiness barely penetrated by gaslight, the smog of factories thick in the air and steeped into heavy coats. It has an active, restless energy.

The dominant note that hits you is leather—birch tar, in this case, since all of the ingredients used by Green (with the exception of the beeswax in Slowdive) are both natural and vegan. Deeply pungent, with the smoke and char of an uncontainable fire, the leather tangles with bergamot and lemon, until it whips and sparks like gunpowder. Acacia, with its honeyed, floral, aniseed-like scent, makes its presence known gradually, taking on a salty black licorice nuance with the top notes. Labdanum and oakmoss bring layers of earthiness and a medicinal aspect, reminiscent of ginseng and chewing tobacco. In the dry down, the birch tar is (mostly) tamed by vanilla, dry, smooth and only semi-sweet. The conflagration has exhausted itself, but the impression of animal hide and heaving flanks remains, prostrate in a gothic ruin of wilted leaves and dead flowers.

Hyde wasn’t an instant need-to-buy on initial test—it’s too aggressively “non-perfumey”, too confronting for me to wear easily around others—but I’ve since become addicted to layering it with other fragrances. Beautifying it, as it were. I especially love it beneath Ultra, which shares with Hyde an assertive, animalic personality. The narcissus in Ultra both mellows and seems to prolong the presence of the birch tar; it’s less lampblack, more burning hay. Having a bottle of Hyde feels like possessing the key to unlocking another realm of scent, dark and foreboding, where primordial impulses are unleashed.
