The virtues of a smoke fragrance may not immediately be apparent - but once you see the figures through this dark mass, one recognises its transformative effect. The smoke here is an entity in its own right, astonishingly shapely and elegant, though intense and bold at the same time. Hyde is a fragrance built from birch tar, which showcases accents of sweetness, woodiness, herbaceousness - it is surprisingly receptive to additions, presenting a double effect of softening and extending. Lemon and bergamot offer relief as acidity cuts through rich smokiness - a clear ringing sound while everything else hums. Certainly, this resonant hum is filled with labdanum, vanilla, and oakmoss - an enriching blend, simple depth becomes complexity. Birch tar’s central bedfellow, however, is glorious cassie flower. In the same family as mimosa, it imparts a distinct floral aspect - all green and yellow, unctuous-balsamic, spicy, powder, and aqueous all at once - it spreads itself across the smoky body of the fragrance.
