It’s hard not to evoke the Platonic form of lavender with talk of Hiram Green’s Arcadia, who has produced an exquisite lavender, exactly what one hopes to smell when the word lavender is uttered. There is no doubt that Arcadia is an aromatic fougere, though it preserves the distinct floral hallmarks of the lavender material - certainly enough to warrant a distinction, calling this a lavender (or lavender-dominant) fougere. Where lavender tends to either swing into minty, camphor freshness (Bon Monsieur by Rogue) or dark caramelised molasses (Fougere Bengale by Parfum d’Empire), Arcadia achieves a fabulous balance with obvious classical inspiration.

The quality is remarkable - brightened up top with bergamot, turned supple with the hay and coumarin flavour of tonka bean and creamy sandalwood. Its finish is ambery and spiced, worked with patchouli, jasmine, and a flash of powdery rose for some ornament and romance, though the scent is harmony all the way through - no flats, no sharps: lavender played on a C-major scale.
