Francesca’s Inspiration:
“During my childhood and teenage years I used to spend lots of time at the seaside. One of the strongest memories of that time is the smell of my skin. Eventually my parents sold the house at the seaside, and university, work, boyfriends, brought me far from that memory. Five years ago I moved to the Netherlands and I forgot the smell of my sweaty, salty skin. Sometimes back I bumped into a face cream of L’Occitane containing Immortelle. The odour of that plant was actually not so pungent in the cream, nonetheless it was strongly pulling out of my head the childhood memory of my skin. I confess I had totally neglected the essential oil of helichrysum which was sitting on my shelf. But now I smelled it again, with a new nose. I worked on a special amber accord, I would say — a human one. A civet tincture reinforced this intimate atmosphere, while a special ambergris molecule added the mineral-salty touch.”

Sex and the Sea is a daring perfume, taking familiar tropical, salty, and aqueous themes and transforming them with a bold animalic amber accord, lending sultriness and intensity to this popular style. The result is a fragrance with a potent, impactful, and mesmerising touch - a complex touch all at once viscous, glossy, sunburnt, and unctuous. the summer counterpart to under my skin

short review because i didn't write much when i sampled it, and what i wrote was basically a small burst of delight: fruity, woody, skin-like, citrus, fresh, beautiful, refreshing, delicious, lollies, love it! "lollies" is the word i want to keep. that's the pineapple and coconut and ambergris doing something translucent and sweet and almost edible, but without ever tipping into tropical cocktail cliche. it's a lolly you'd lick off warm skin.
the trick is the base. civet and ambergris and labdanum are doing enough quiet animalic grounding that the fruit reads alive rather than synthetic. this is the thing bianchi does that i don't think many other people can do, she takes materials i would normally bounce off (pineapple, coconut, citrus, the whole beach register) and puts a skin underneath them, and suddenly i'm interested. i generally don't like fruity. i generally don't like citrus. and here i am saying beautiful and delicious about both.
it's in the same family as under my skin in the sense that the DNA is unmistakable, same orris butter and sandalwood and musky skin-like drydown, but it's pointed at a completely different weather system. under my skin is midnight and sheets. sex and the sea is mid-afternoon and salt and the back of someone's neck. carnal optimism instead of dark interiority. same perfumer, two moods.
