Francesca’s Inspiration:
“The inspiration for Etruscan Water comes from two different sources. The first one is my personal memory: being born and raised in Tuscany, we could go to the beach in the South of the region, where hundreds of years ago our forefathers, the Etruscans, used to live. In order to access the most stunning, well hidden small bays, and offering the most transparent water, there was a 30 minute walk through the woods. These woods are full of wonders! The smell of typical Mediterranean vegetation is charming and, if you are lucky (or unfortunate…) you could bump into a wild boar – or even some remains of the Etruscan civilization. The salty, refreshing smell of the sea soothes you from the heat of the sun that is warming up your skin. The second source of inspiration is my personal research on masterpieces of perfumery, as I have recently been intrigued by the classical masculine citrusy cologne – not the light ones, but those with a strong character.”

EDITOR'S NOTES

Etruscan Water is for lovers of herbal notes in perfumery - a singular combination of bitter, sweet, sour, crunchy, and potent: salubrious but also a little bit dangerous. The Chypre is the natural home for style, as oakmoss becomes the perfect landing pad for these otherwise ephemeral green notes. An umbrous core manages to at once scintillate; and that is the triumphant contradiction that defines Etruscan Water, which is only possible within the Chypre category. Francesca Bianchi has constructed a fragrance that is full, vertical, and broad: pithy citrus skins work with the leafiness of petitgrain, roused with spicy caraway and basil, fortified with the steadiness of smoky-earthy vetiver. Once you work your way through all of this, Etruscan Water is ready to reveal its balsamic, mossy, leathery and animalic sides to you. Worn insouciantly, and the fragrance is a dependable and steady work of retro perfumery; with some attention, the details manifest themselves infinitely.

An Aramis 1966 re-animation: the odour vaulted to the cerement of a buried great-grandfather

The plush, cushioned interior of my Pappou’s hatchback, holding the heat of extinguished Marlborough’s, pain thinner and noxious fumes from his paint brushes, sweat and labour. Maybe it was the latent nicotine that crept into the budding neurons of my neonate cortex, priming current addictions; priming visions of family at the expense of toxins, whether chemical or bureaucratic; and priming the expectation of a $50 dollar bill, forced into my pocket as I squirmed and hesitated and weaseled about like my mother trained me — inevitably giving way to his calloused hands.

My young, soft face would greet his freshly damp, leathery skin exposed violently with its ethnic charm as I would go in for a loving hug. His face astringent from the Aramis aftershave we would buy him for his birthday every year without fail, that would meander down into the linen or cotton of his button-up or singlet, respectively.

He lives on a highway, and nestled behind an automotive with cars leaking radiator fluid, that we would hide under as children, a venomous sanctuary. The rushing petroleum smog of trucks traveling from foreign far-aways rushing past… this too, a reminder that sometimes we are drawn to the rush of hydrocarbon poisons, perhaps, inspiring our desire for the very genre of Chypres.

Francesca Bianci manages to capture this moment with precision, of course. Here oakmoss meets smoke meets lemon trees and spinach growing out of concrete. For some reason I hold the passionate belief that this is the closest we will see to Aramis 1966, as if we were to go on a grave robbery just to smell the cerement of our ancestors. This is HELLA retro, but I’ll continue to douse myself in it in anticipation of that $50 dollar bill…
