"Byzantine Amber is the third fragrance that makes up, together with Libertine Neroli and Unspoken Musk, the series specifically dedicated to the glorious raw materials of perfumery, reinterpreted according to the style of the house. Byzantine Amber is an intense and decadent perfume, like a great civilization in the final phase of its splendour. Salome by Gustave Moreau is a painting that can evoke the splendour and drama of this olfactory work in images.
The beautiful mosaics of the Byzantine civilization, such as those of Ravenna, have gleaming gold tesserae which are imperfect for being worn out over time. This sense of theatrical and luminous splendour accompanied by a dark and obscure side inspired Byzantine Amber. The geranium – pulpy, rosy, spicy, slightly green, contrasts with the dry minerality of the ambergris and styrax. The backbones of this work is a familiar structure, an ambery accord enriched by the spice that makes it sensual: cinnamon. This warm and shiny accord is darkened by leathery, smoky and animal aspects, which give intensity and characterize the composition.”

Francesca Bianchi’s Byzantine Amber is a breathtaking monument of dark, regal opulence. i am a massive bianchi fan. under my skin is my anchor. the dark side and sex and the sea are confirmed loves. so it pains me a little to say this one doesn't work on me, because everything in me wanted it to.
the opening is the problem. harsh, challenging, heavy. too smoky, too medicinal. i got immediate flashbacks to the tarry-phenolic-cade register i cannot stand, that BBQ touch that sits at the back of my throat and doesn't leave. i think it's the styrax arriving early at extrait concentration, because extraits don't really have a traditional opening, the base materials just turn up straight away. whatever the chemistry is, my nose read it as smoky leather going medicinal, and i just sat there enduring it waiting for the bianchi i know to arrive.
and she does arrive. a few hours in the drydown is really nice. sweet, soft, quiet, animalic, dark honey, beeswax. the bianchi base doing the thing the bianchi base does. if i smelled just this part in isolation i'd be reaching for my card.
but two problems. one, getting there means sitting through an opening that activates a confirmed aversion, and life is too short. two, even once you arrive, the drydown is quieter than i'd like. it goes very skin-close. under my skin and sex and the sea have more presence in this register, more radiance, more of that warm pulsing thing.
so it's a real one: a bianchi that isn't for me. i'd rather re-buy under my skin than chase this drydown through that opening.
