Editor's Notes

Rien, which means 'nothing' in French, is quite the perverse name. Rien Incense Intense instead is maximal perfumery - big, bold, and full. Unsweetened leather and animalics, with a nebulous incense that pulls people right in. Spray lightly and wear with discretion.

This is the one, I’ve finally found it. I was desperately searching for a ‘church incense’ scent but was always let down when they would smell like the ashes of frankincense. What I’ve realised I was searching for was the scent of a black metal band committing arson on a Norway Christian church. This is woody, mysterious, ritualistic and straight up black metal. I’m in love

An addictive effervescent and supple leather, smouldering.

If Comme des Garçons Avignon is taken as the prototypical church incense, Rien is the crepuscular but pearly glow emanating from a witches sabbath on the Moon, with a cosmic expansiveness and metallic chill. It is “sterile” and “clean”, but only insofar as the Moon is — unable to sustain infection due to the lack of a viable host. Incredibly special, an etude on aldehydes.

A solid 'nightclub' olibanum

This one is known as a 'beast mode' fragrance - one that will project, turn heads and linger. Great for a night out. Olibanum is a note that I equate with ritual, mystery, calmness, and darkness. This fragrance ramps that up with a slightly whiney animalistic angle that is less cosy and more confronting. Not quite as complex and nuanced as Mancera's olibanum and nowhere near as complex and cosy as Piguet's Casbah - but very much a great raw 'night out' frankincense regardless. A solid buy.

The fragrance equivalent of a small atomic explosion

The name 'intense incense' fits very well here which is strange because usually the names of Etat Libre d'Orange's fragrances give zero indication of what the juice actually smells like. I love this fragrance, I don't feel I have the personality to pull this off but I just can't keep my nose away from my elbow. Will I buy the full bottle? Probably, if only because it has the staying power of a small nuclear explosion.
