It is at first a flash of lemon, insanely vibrant and bright, striking like lightning in the middle of the night. Fluttering notes of lime, lively and shrill, soon come forth, welded into the metallic zing of mandarin, its leathery zest and bittersweetness. Shackled in a cage of dark woods, the citrus fight with a newfound strength, their light shining brighter as delicate notes of elemi and a heavenly touch of Hojari frankincense burst open. Even as the smoke rises and crashes in waves of burnt cade, spicy guaiacwood and incandescent vetiver, the citrus bouquet carries its brilliance proud, undefeated, and undimmed. A tale of trying and reaching, of life overcoming shade, Search captures the virile energy of resilient minds unafraid to fight their inner darkness to become their ideal self.

In Search, smoke notes are brightened as they wrap around colourful orbs of citrus fruit, as if the trunk of a citrus tree were set alight. Smoky warmth rises up in Search, caramelising the sugars found in the lemons, limes, and mandarins that make up the hesperidic profile of this scent. The scent is a delight, and its execution is free of ambiguity and without mystery - its contrasts are to the point, no nonsense and evocative. Its combination of cade, vetiver, and guaiac are wood notes most renowned for their dark and smoky touch, balanced with the illuminating sheen of elemi and quality olibanum, no less reiterated by the citrus notes. Within there are impressions of saltiness, an image of a bonfire by the shoreline, fuelled by woods impregnated with brine and dried out in the sun. The contrast between light and dark is stark and dramatic, and it is deeply bewitching.

This fragrance is unique and perfectly gorgeous!

Imagine you’re enjoying a picnic beside a lemon orchard on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. It’s summer and as the air warms you smell the beautiful aroma of citrus. Not the sweet, tang of cut fruit but the dry smell of volatile oils, exuded from the skin of a thousand lemons. But there’s trouble in this paradise. It seems a farmer has recently pruned his trees and decided to burn the cuttings – perhaps last night. The fire is out and there’s no visible smoke, but you can’t miss the smell of smouldering green tree limbs in the distance. It’s black, acrid fingers reach into your nose to do battle with the lovely citrus aromas. Luckily, the fruit prevails.

Alexis Grugeon has made a masterpiece here. The smoke notes could easily dominate, being the more acrid green variety, rather than spicy incense. They persist through the dry down but never get the upper hand. The magic is in how Grugeon uses them to buttress the citrus and give it longevity that cannot be achieved with a citrus top note. This perfume has a beastly longevity. When it arrived, I sprayed once on my wrist. Then I had a shower, and it was still projecting like crazy. It lasted all day and into the night. Amazing!

I’m not a big fan of Amouage as I find them to be a bit too “conventional”. This one is anything but! It will be my summer signature.
