Lovers of the magnificent Jubilation XXV will recognise this creation immediately, which retains the defining features of the original but sees them from up close. Jubilation 40 is a concentrated orb of special scent where everything moves into the centre; it is an aromatic layering of many notes to form what is essentially a trifle of fruit, incense, spice, and resin. Its arms are open, and everything hangs together, and this is the skill of master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, who artfully builds vast aromatic sculptures never at the expense of clarity. Blackberry coexists with cedar, blackcurrant with oud, orange with frankincense, bay leaf and moss, and so on. Duchaufour capably uses fruit notes to provide tonality, nuance, and impact. There is immense delight in these combinations, especially when everything is apparent and rendered to offer their fullest possible expression.

In the end, however, Jubilation 40 wears beautifully, and is defined by a mossy-patchouli ‘chypre’ skeleton flushed end to end with a hypnotising grade of Omani incense. Its profile is rich and broad, dry yet vibrant, with a pleasing smokiness for contrast. Its overall impression and force is unchanged, and Jubilation 40 remains a scent of unfettered opulence - the word regal would not be a misattribution here.
