Shapton 16000 Glass Stone

I decided to get a 16000 grit Shapton stones as my el cheapo 8000 grit stones just werent doing the job on my straight razors. After only two hones on the Shapton five out of my six razors are good again with the other two needing a bit more work but improving. My lesson here is pay the money to get a good quality stone and Shapton make a great product

I have four of the Shapton Glass Stones and am still amazed on the edge that they can produce. There is a bit of drag when using it which is good but what is amazing is that this drag just feels like smooth resistance and the results speak for themselves. I use these to hone straight razors. I sharpened one today after deliberately blunting the edge first to get rid of imperfections and incorrect sharpening. In order used a 2000, 4000, 8000, 16000 then finished on 3 graded strops. Then shaved with it.
The shave was very smooth and clean.

I own Shapton 8000, 16000 & 30000 grit stones. It is wide enough for my straight razors. I honed the razors eight times each side. It produced a finish on my great great grandfather's Bengal razor, equal to a 'Feather Cut' disposable straight razor blade; which I swear is scalpel sharp. My razors were sharpened once like this in March and they are still sharp in October with a few slaps on a Dovo strop before each shave.

Great quality stone that doesn't need pre-soaking, so it's really fast to use. Men's Biz's prices are awesome too, overseas stores will charge you this price in USD plus shipping.

The first thing I did was to put my Veritas steel straight edge over the stone. I could see no light anywhere as I checked both diagonals and centre length. Gave it a one minute soak and finished off a couple of knives previously done to 6000. Two or three strokes and I could already see the difference. It was whisper quiet and soft to use, leaving a nice polished edge similar to my rouge flat strop.

The one thing I really want to comment on here is the phenomenal service. I ordered it online at 2pm and was using it just after midday the next day. I've never seen turnaround like this before.

Unlike the previous reviewer, I noticed a big improvement over the 8K. Really helped to polish the steel making my straights smoother and noticeably quieter when shaving (and my beard is tough). The key is, work through the grits - 1000 (create the bevel first and you probably don't need to use this again unless you chip the blade), 4000 (as per Lynn Abrams' 40 small circles each side), 8000 (10 laps) and finally 16k (8 laps). Then strop on leather and you are ready to go. Easily passes the hanging hair test at 4000K. Use light pressure at 16k as you are just polishing and not really sharpening. If the bevel scratches, too much pressure is being used.

The stone has good feedback and is a nice size however the scratches left on the bevel after using a 8k hone are horrendous and if mensbiz offered me a refund I would accept and buy a naniwa 12 k.
