Capt. Fawcett Encourages Friendly Behaviour

At the age of 70, I’ve come to accept a hard truth: the short stubble that once made me look rugged and dashing now makes me look like I’ve just lost an argument with life… and possibly a nap.

Given that my beard has gone gloriously white, I thought, “Why not lean into it?” So I grew it out, and to my delight, I began to resemble none other than King George V himself. Regal! Majestic! Slightly intimidating! I was thrilled… until I realised my beard had ambitions of its own. Wavy, curly, and entirely uninterested in royal discipline.

What I wanted was a smooth, straight, dignified look. What I had was… a windswept philosopher.

Enter Captain Fawcett’s beard balm, discovered during a trip through Dubai (as all good grooming upgrades should be). A quick application later, and voilà, my beard snapped into shape. Straight, controlled, and exuding the kind of distinction usually reserved for portraits and banknotes. I was delighted.

But then, something unexpected happened.

For years, I’ve walked through Clapham Common in London in complete anonymity. Not a nod. Not a glance. Not even a suspicious side-eye. Suddenly, with my newly groomed, Captain Fawcett-approved beard… people started saying, “Good morning!”

To me.

Unprompted.

From strangers.

I thought it was a fluke. It wasn’t. It happened again. And again.
The only logical conclusion? This beard, this magnificent, well-disciplined, balm-enhanced masterpiece, has elevated me from “grumpy old man” to “distinguished gentleman worthy of polite greeting.”

Who would have thought?
