The brazen Jasmin et Cigarette by Etat Libre d’Orange shocks with the initial forwardness of its name – only to reveal a gorgeous harmonisation between pure white jasmine flower and the ashy trails of tobacco, coating the flower in a background puff of smoke, emphasising its pristine purity. It fascinates with its clashing of the sacred and profane, confronting the aesthetic and moral sensibilities that prescribe how we should – and shouldn’t – smell. Imagine film noir, the era of pinstripes, big fur coats, shadows on faces and smoky hazes. A Hitchcock blonde femme? A hardboiled detective? Its jasmine and tobacco notes are tied together with the blushing and ripe warmth of apricot, festooned in a nest of sunwarmed hay. This is one big narcotic effect, a dizzyingly good length of realistic jasmine trailing along humid heat and air - its radiance is marvellous.

I LOVE this scent and am disappointed it never seems to be in stock more than 5 minutes, no matter how many wait lists I am on. Please put one aside for me, Men’s Biz!

This is one of my favourite scents. The 'tobacco' hits me immediately, not unpleasant by any means, not instantly smoky, more like a cool menthol. The cool menthol stays as a prominent top note. The jasmine underpins it beautifully, the scent is by no means floral, not at all.

This is very Marlene Dietrich sitting in a club, smoking, arched eyebrow, ignoring everyone around her. Beguiling everyone.

Maybe actually more film noir, I think. Lana Turner, Barbara Stanwyck or even Janet Leigh, it's very Hitchcock Blonde.

The menthol is the slap of a cream leather glove on your face and the jasmine is the subtle chide that it couldn’t have really hurt……

I had to try it although I knew it wouldn't be for me. I'm glad I got a sample and so is my friend Jaime, she is head over heels in love and planning to buy a bottle. It's equal parts fancy and trashy, with a distinctly feminine edge. Superb, wonderful, glorious, I absolutely love it on her.
